As I mentioned before, a first birthday is the perfect reason to celebrate. Since our little guy only turns one once, I wanted his party to be creative and memorable all while staying within a modest budget. It is only a first birthday afterall--we're saving the big bucks to splurge on his third. Just kidding of course!
Anyway, the theme was monkeys. So, I began by commissioning Dave to design a shirt for Jonah to wear on his big day. Daddy whipped up a little of his designing magic and voila, a perfect monkey-themed first birthday shirt was made.

My second big job was the decorations. We had a lot of fun with streamers, tissue paper and curling ribbon. We had vines and trees and leaves hanging from the ceiling. We even made some monkey balloons. After seeing Ellie snatch the balloon from her little bro, I decided to make one for each of them. It made them happy and it made me happy to put an end to the fisitcuffs.

So the last thing to figure out was the cake. So I turned to Martha for a little inspiration. I made the monkey cake in the Kids magazine. Unfortunately, I forgot to buy the black licorice string for the mouth. After sending my dad all over town looking for black licorice, we settled on a little improvisation. Dave helped with this one and I think it turned out A-ok. I don't know if it would have made Martha proud, but everyone at the party got a good chuckle out of it. I also made a mini version of the big cake with whipped cream icing for Jonah to devour. Between the cake, the frozen chocolate mini bananas, the stuffed hamburgers, the hotdogs, and the great photo-ops there was more than enough for everyone to walk away feeling pretty happy.
